Le Meridien Penina, situated on the western side of the Algarve 4 km from Alvor and less than an hours drive from Faro, is one of the finest golf resorts in Europe.

Once the home of the late Sir Henry Cotton, who designed the original Championship course, Penina has a certain splendour about it. Indeed the combination of the hotel also being the clubhouse, is a concept rare to find at any other European golf resort and gives the hotel a unique ambience which is both charming and practical. Golfing tales of woe and joy flow from the Sir Henry Cotton Bar and no matter where you are in the hotel you are reminded of the resorts long standing relationship with many of the sport’s legendry players.

Penina has hosted numerous Portuguese and Algarve Opens, most recently in 2006, which is testament to the quality of its Championship course. In addition to the Championship course there’s also the excellent 9 hole Resort course, and for those learning the game there’s the Academy course. The practice facilities are first class with space to accommodate seventy players, a large area for short game practice and putting green.

However, Penina is not just a resort for golfers and has plenty to offer families. There’s the very well equipped and staffed Penguin Village Kids Club which caters for children from 3-12 years old. During the summer months (Jun – Sep) the hotel operates a complimentary shuttle to its beach club, and for the energetic there are plenty of sports facilities. The hotel also has a choice of seven restaurants ranging from the poolside snack bar to the Grill Room. Amongst Penina’s other facilities are six flood lit tennis courts, a full size snooker table, 3 km jogging track and a full size football pitch which has played host to both Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund football clubs.

There are many things that make Penina special and none more so than the excellent staff, most of whom have worked at Penina for many years. The hotel has real charm and if you are looking for a holiday where you can walk straight from the hotel on to the golf course, then Penina comes highly recommended.

Location

Alvor

Penina is situated 70 km to the west of Faro airport, a driving time of approximately 45 minutes. The hotel is easy to find as it’s located on the N125, the original main road that runs almost the entire length of the Algarve.

The closest major towns are:

Alvor = 4 km
Portimao = 5 km
Lagos = 12 km
Silves = 17 km

Accommodation

The hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2008/09 which included both the bedrooms and most of the public rooms.

The hotel offers a choice of seven room categories:

Twin or Single Classic
These are north facing rooms and overlook the entrance to the hotel, not all of them have balconies.

Twin or Single Superior
These rooms are the same size as the standard ‘Classic’ rooms, however they are south facing and overlook the pool.

Studio
These rooms are situated in the roof of the hotel and a slightly novel design. There is a small raised lounge area and the rooms are all south facing and overlooking the pool.

Junior Suite
These rooms are much larger than the standard rooms and have a lounge area. They can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children up to 12 years old sharing a convertible sofa. These rooms are all south facing and overlooking the pool.

Family Rooms
These rooms are much larger than the Junior Suite and can sleep 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 children in two bedrooms. These rooms are all south facing and overlooking the pool.

Grand Suite (1 bedroom)
These rooms consist of a bedroom with a double bed and a separate lounge with a convertible sofa. They can sleep 2 adults and 2 children aged up to 12. They are also south facing and overlooking the pool.

Grand Suite (2 bedrooms)
These rooms consist of 2 bedrooms and a separate lounge and a convertible sofa. They can sleep 4 adults and 2 children aged up to 12. They are also south facing and overlooking the pool.
